A colloquium was held, as usual, a day before the yam cutting rite. This year’s theme focused on quality education and the need to build a University in the community. More than five Professors from various academia, entrepreneurs, and youths gathered to share ideas at the Mbaise Colloquium 2018. The new yam festival or Iri Ji is an age long ceremony which celebrates the harvest of yams from the farm. It is a traditional way our thanksgiving for bounty harvest.
Igbos believed that yam is the king of all crops. Thus a wealthy man was expected to have a large yam barn to feed his household until the next farming season.
As families proceed to harvest more yams and other crops, the next yam festival is just 12 months away!
