Thugs removed Fayose’s cap at the Ondo campaign rally due to political battle in Ekiti. Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, lost his cap in Ondo Town as the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) rounded off its campaign with a mega rally during the Ondo governorship election. Fayose who governed Ekiti from 2003 to 2006; and from 2014 to 2018.
On that fateful day, Fayose ambled to his seat on the podium in the packed venue of the event, thugs marched their way aggressively. One thug yanked off the green cap emblazoned with the name ‘Eyitayo’ from Fayose’s head.
Moments later, the group of thugs engaged the former governor’s security personnel in fisticuffs as a melee ensued. This brought some political undertones to the events that transpired at the venue of the rally.
Sources say Fayose was embarrassed because of an ongoing political duel with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
“Fayose has been speaking ill of Makinde over the Ekiti PDP crisis. Fayose led some PDP stakeholders from the southwest to Secondus (PDP Chairman) to protest Makinde’s high handedness. Fayose wants to be the leader of the PDP in the southwest and in Ekiti, but Makinde has been having none of it.
“Senator Abiodun Olujimi and Fayose have been at loggerheads over who should control the PDP structure in Ekiti.
“Olujimi’s argument is that as the only senator from Ekiti representing PDP, she should naturally be the leader. Makinde is leaning her way because he considers Fayose too overbearing.
“The boys decided to disgrace Fayose in Ondo as a way of sending a message his way. The boys who removed Fayose’s cap in public swear allegiance to Makinde,” one source in the PDP disclosed.
Meanwhile, Fayose reacts, blames Makinde, George for the humiliation
Fayose has blamed Makinde and former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Bode George, for his public humiliation.
Reacting through his media aide, Lere Olayinka, the former governor said despite the shameful act, he won’t stop saying the truth concerning the running of the party in the southwest zone.
He said that those who have failed to produce any results in Lagos State since 1999 will be made to retire.
He added that he will tender a formal report concerning the incident to the security agencies and the relevant party authorities, noting that it was not something to be handled with levity; as security agencies will have to unravel all the thugs brought to the event and their sponsors.
“That’s how late Chief Bola Ige’s cap was removed in Ile Ife, Osun State then and we all know what happened later,” Fayose said.
“So this one will not be ignored and treated as one of those things.
“The masterminds had it all planned and they followed it up by celebrating what they saw as the success of their plot. They even capped it up by circulating the video.
“So it was not an accident, it was planned. But those who planned it only succeeded in advertising their political myopic because the popularity of the brand Ayo Fayose Osokomole cannot be rubbished by such a childish act.
“That they must have seen in the reaction of the people at the rally and I am sure they know that they can’t get such loud ovation even if they spend all the money in this world.
“As for me, I am unperturbed and I must say it clearly that those newcomers to the PDP and their old allies, who won’t mind spoiling the image of the party to achieve their aims will not be allowed to succeed,” he said.
The PDP’s mega rally in Ondo Town was held on the same day the APC held hers at the Akure township stadium.
Chieftains and governors of both political parties attended these rallies.
The Ondo governorship election will take place on October 10, 2020.
