Recall Whitney Adeniran, a student of Chrisland School, Opebi in Ikeja branch, reportedly died during a sporting event at Agege Stadium on Thursday.
The parents of the deceased have accused the school of negligence as they continued questioning what happened to their daughter.
The family alleged that the school made no provision for emergency response at the event, hence their daughter was allegedly not administered first aid at the scene of incident.
The mother of the girl emphatically said that her girl had no pre-existing heart condition despite the doctor’s allusion to a cardiac arrest.

My names are Dr Micheal Adeyemi Adeniran, I am a father of a 12 years old Whitney Adeniran who died at chrisland International high school, Opebi, Lagos inter house sport at agege stadium. On 9th /2/2023 .my daughter name is (Whitney Adeniran)
it happened that my daughter attend CHRISLAND HIGH SCHOOL and it was their inter-house sport event yesterday(Thursday) February 9th 2023 and she dressed up from home,healthy with no health conditions or sickness at all,the school bus came to pick her up to the venue of the event at Agege stadium,
To the biggest shock of my life by 1pm in the afternoon I got a call from my wife that she was informed that our daughter slumped at the inter house sport and she was rushed to the clinic…..
My wife was at the venue even before she started.
She was never informed or call untill they have conveyed our child out of the venue before they informed her.
On arrival of my wife at the health center where they took my daughter.my daughter was lying dead With her lips black and her tongue black.
My wife called me urgently, I left my office to the place and found my 12year old daughter lying dead on ground. I asked question for what happened to my daughter and the school authority could not get me any information as to what happened to my child in their care.
I gave chrisland school a healthy vibrant young girl what Chrisland return to me is a dead child. My entire family is in deep sorrow but the school Authority claimed they know nothing about my daughter death and all they know is that my daughter slumped and died.
Police begin investigation into Chrisland student’s death
The police command in Lagos State, says it has begun investigation into the death of Miss Whitney Adeniran, a 12-year-old student of Chrisland School in Lagos.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Lagos State, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.
Hundeyin said the Pen Cinema police division in Agege was handling the preliminary iHe said that the Homicide Section of the State Central Investigation Department, Panti, would take over the case on Monday for discreet investigation.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of the School over the death of the student.
The Commissioner for Education in Lagos, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, in a statement, said that the school was closed pending the ongoing probe.
“We also note the impact of this unfortunate event on family, friends, and acquaintance of Whitney and call for calm as we assure that no effort will be spared in investigating the incident,” she stated.
Earlier, the management of Chrisland School, in a statement on the incident, claimed Whitney had reported “not-too-buoyant” health on January 20, contrary to claims by her parents.
The school said it opted to take her to a health centre, and not a hospital, based on proximity considerations.
Chrisland dismissed insinuations that there was foul play in the death case while citing that she slumped in public.
“Our immediate response was to take advantage of proximity by identifying the nearest medical facility to take her to, where the doctor on duty administered oxygen and every aid possible to her,” the school claimed.
Lagos govt orders coroner inquest into Whitney’s death
The Lagos State Government has ordered a coroner’s inquest to ascertain the cause of death in the case of the late Whitney Omodesola Adeniran, a 12-year-old student of Chrisland School, who died on Thursday, 9th February 2023.
The Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN) gave the directive in a statement today, noting that a thorough investigation will be carried out to ascertain the cause of death.
A Coroner’s Inquest has immediately been requested, in line with sections 14 and 15 of the Coroners’ Systems Law, Laws of Lagos State 2015, to determine the cause and circumstances of death.
By Section 14(1)(d) of the Coroners’ System Law of the State: “A report of death shall be made to any of the agencies for the report of death or the office of the Coroner and be subject to post-mortem examination where there is reasonable cause to believe that the cause of death was: violent, unnatural or suspicious.”
Section 15(1) and (9) further enjoins the Coroner to hold an inquest whenever he or she is informed that the death of the deceased person was in a violent, unnatural, or suspicious situation or believes an inquest is desirable following the report of a reportable death.
The commissioner noted that as a government, the security and well-being of citizens are of utmost importance while assuring the public that everything will be done to ensure that the cause of death is known.
“The findings of this investigation will be made public in due course and appropriate sanctions meted out to anyone found culpable.”
